Jurisprudence (Law) Related Continuing Education Information

The New Jurisprudence Requirement:

In March 2003 an amendment was added to the continuing education rule in section 4759-4-04 (D) of the Ohio Administrative Code and specifies:

*** "Beginning in two thousand-five, on odd numbered calendar years, each applicant for renewal of a license shall report to the board completion of at least one continuing professional education unit in board approved education in jurisprudence.

Board approved programs in jurisprudence shall include approved programs and activities relating to current laws, rules, and regulations dealing with the practice of dietetics and recent changes that have occurred to those laws, rules, and regulations. A list of approved programs and activities will be published by the board and posted on the board's web-site."

Dietitians seeking to renew their Ohio licenses during odd-numbered years are required to provide evidence to the Ohio Board of Dietetics that they completed at least one continuing professional education unit from an OBD approved jurisprudence (law) related program.

The appropriate evidence (which should be attached to the renewal application) is a copy of a certificate of completion provided by the sponsor of the program. The certificate should clearly indicate that the program is approved by the Ohio Board of Dietetics to meet the jurisprudence requirement, and include the name of the participant, title of the program, date and location of the program, and be signed by the provider.

Dietitians should be careful to complete different programs each time they submit an approved program to the Board. The same program may not be submitted twice.

Dietitians meeting the requirement for the first time may benefit from completing the first Board approved Home Study Course titled "Ohio Board of Dietetics Jurisprudence Continuing Education Requirement" that is available on-line at the Quia web-site www.quia.com/web. The course explains the jurisprudence requirement, and upon successful completion of the quiz will provide a certificate that may be used to meet the jurisprudence requirement. (Please note that dietitians licensed in Ohio or renewing their licenses since 2003 may have previously completed this course and should not attempt to submit it a second time for jurisprudence credit.)

The following programs have been approved by the Ohio Board of Dietetics to meet the 2009 Jurisprudence continuing requirement:
